This chapter delves into the global manifestation of Environmental Education Centres (EECs), tracing their development and impact across various regions. Beginning with an historical context, it examines the emergence of national parks and environmental and sustainability education antecedent’s such as the Outward Bound movement—pioneering personal development through outdoor adventure. The evolution of global governance in ESE and alternatives, including Indigenous input, are explored. Key milestones such as the Earth Charter and the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the UNESCO’s ESD Roadmap and Sustainable Development Goal 4.7—ESD and Global Citizenship are charted. A diverse range of EECs, each shaped by unique historical, social, cultural, political, and environmental contexts, many of which are intertwined with colonial legacies, are explored. The chapter weaves a rich tapestry of global EEC examples, showcasing EEC characteristics and evolution. The chapter closes with the recognition that EECs play an important supportive and active role in the greater ESE collective, in particular connecting people to nature and proactive behaviour—and at times transformative education. However, the dissonance between where we are and where we need to be and the conscientisation required to shift our collective consciousness to the ecocentrism required is stark.
