Hybrid Process Technologies for Sustainable Water Decontamination

The rapid expansion of urbanization and industrialization has led to the release of large amounts of contaminated effluents into water bodies. The increasing global production of wastewater is contributing to water shortages and the deterioration of water quality. The scarcity of freshwater has driven efforts to enhance the current water treatment processes and develop advanced and sustainable technologies. Various conventional techniques—such as adsorption, coagulation, oxidation, membrane separation, and bioremediation—have been extensively employed to remediate the contaminated effluents, yet each has its limitations. Hybrid wastewater treatment processes have newly emerged and proven effective for wastewater remediation due to their distinct benefits over conventional methods. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of hybrid wastewater treatment systems achieved by the synergistic combination of different conventional techniques, focusing on some important case studies from relevant literature. These hybrid systems ensure the production of high-quality treated water, facilitating its sustainable reintroduction into the hydrological cycle with minimal environmental and economic repercussions. Finally, this chapter outlines some recommendations for future endeavors to enable efficient large-scale operation of hybrid wastewater treatment processes.
