The sediment load carried by rivers is inconsistent and demonstrates significant temporal and geographical fluctuations. Human activities, particularly dams and reservoirs, exercise control over several rivers globally. Previous studies have recorded a worldwide decrease in the suspended sediment load carried by rivers due to the functioning of hydraulic infrastructure. Therefore, it is essential to understand the influence of reservoir operations on sediment movement to properly comprehend sediment dynamics. These structures impede the uninterrupted flow of rivers by altering water circulation patterns and influencing sediment transport. This chapter aims to examine various critical facets concerning reservoirs and dams, encompassing their influence on suspended sediment dynamics, alterations and disruptions in sediment transport, sediment accumulation within reservoirs, prior global studies on quantifying changes in suspended sediment due to reservoir operations, and sediment management strategies. This chapter elucidates the complex relationships between reservoir management and the dynamics of suspended sediment in rivers. This chapter presents a case study of the Godavari basin, examining the effects of significant dam or reservoir construction and operation on the flow of suspended materials near the basin’s outlet. The results from this chapter may aid in developing effective strategies for the sustainable management of hydraulic infrastructure to guarantee their longevity.
