The government of Bangladesh has recently launched a number of projects to harvest resources from the ocean in order to meet sustainable development objectives. Bangladesh has 710 km2 of coastlines where 45 million people are living. The ocean is contributing a significant role in various sectors, especially freight trading, fishery, oil and gas, tourism, and renewable energy. The Bangladeshi government has already implemented a number of important actions to flourish and use marine resources, particularly a workshop on the blue economy, the inclusion of the blue economy in the Seventh Five-Year Plan, the formation of a “Blue Economy Cell” under the Foreign Affairs ministry. While the government has identified 26 potential sectors for the Blue Economy, Bangladesh is still far behind in meeting its goal. Moreover, the government has to overcome various barriers to using these ocean-based resources, especially unplanned coastal development and urbanization, overfishing, depletion of biodiversity, pollution, oil spills, and shipbreaking industries. This chapter will deal with barriers regarding blue economy sectors as well as probable opportunities and policies needed to overcome the barriers to using ocean-based resources. Furthermore, this chapter will also discuss conservation strategies for sustainable blue economic growth.

摘要
