The epilogue considers Lawrence Langer’s 2021 critique of Lengyel’s testimony and its place in Holocaust scholarship in light of the insights gained in the preceding chapters about narrative, translation, publication contexts, morality and gender. Challenges about the veracity of aspects of Lengyel’s accounts, we contend, need to be considered in relation to the multi-disciplinary study of testimonial statements of Holocaust survivors. We posit the value of detailed engagement with ‘embellished’ Holocaust testimonies (Sue Vice) and propose to read historical inaccuracies in relation to the narrative strategies, publication contexts and addressees of the testimonial statements.
