Taking as its starting point the translation and edition history of Lengyel’s testimony, this chapter considers the narrative and linguistic resources available to the testifier in the immediate post-war years. It explores the text’s transformations and rewritings for new readerships, asking what this means for questions of authenticity and the individual voice of the survivor. Lengyel’s text underwent significant restructuring in the passage from French to English, shifting between an emphasis on political resistance and a bourgeois ethics of respectability, all the time seeking to find a form and style adequate to the experience of Auschwitz. The chapter also addresses Lengyel’s problematic depictions of female sadism and homosexuality, suggesting that they have a narrative function beyond a desire to attract a readership looking for prurient accounts of camp life.
