Evaluating Node Contribution in Network Path Transport Using Physarum Centrality

Maintaining stable transportation in infrastructure networks is a critical issue, even with limited resources and costs. This study investigates the effectiveness of Physarum centrality ( \(C_\textrm{P}\) ) in measuring each node’s contribution to transportation between network nodes. We calculated conductance, a measure of transport efficiency, in Unit Disk Graphs as nodes were removed in ascending order of centrality. Results show that \(C_\textrm{P}\) maintained higher conductance compared to weighted degree and betweenness centrality, regardless of the node removal rate. \(C_\textrm{P}\) also outperformed other centralities across varying total transportation flows. Thus, by using \(C_\textrm{P}\) as an indicator, stable transportation can be maintained with fewer intermediate nodes.
