We ask how the generosity and coverage of employment protection, expressed through the standard-setting and privileging functions of employment law, have developed worldwide. Based on well-established explanations, we investigate four assumptions about how this development might have unfolded: That standard-setting and privileging employment law originated from Europe and spread across the globe; that it was a byproduct of economic development; that it was applied in conjunction with a country’s integration into global value chains; that it was associated with the impact of gender agency. We test our assumptions by combining Worlds of Labour (WoL) trend data on 84 countries for the period from 1970 to 2013 with other available data sources and then comparing means.
