The Paris Agreement was enacted in 2016 with the primary objective of enhancing the global response to climate change by striving to restrict the rise of global temperature to 1.5 °C by the conclusion of the twenty-first century until the ambition of reaching the climate-neutrality goal by the next three decades; industries’ transformation is crucial to accelerate decarbonization in all sectors, including facility management. According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 41011:2017), facility management is the organizational function that integrates people, places, and processes within the built environment. It interacts with all aspects of daily life in urban communities, including maintaining buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure, managing equipment, supplying resources, managing waste, and ensuring human satisfaction. These probable spectra of activities are within its purview, showing that the potential of reducing carbon footprint and improving sustainable performance can be tackled at numerous scales. The study aims to provide a pilot case study to enable a strategic sustainability transition in a facility management firm in Egypt to combine efforts toward decarbonizing the industry. The study shows the procedure and tactical steps obtained to enable this transition, highlighting examples of on-ground practices, quantifying their environmental and economic impacts, and discussing the social impacts. The study employed a field method (case study) by providing an in-depth analysis of a successful sustainable transition in a flagship facility management firm in Egypt using an agile approach within a cross-disciplinary collaboration between academic research and facility management experts. The results highlighted the need for cocreation for exhaustive capacity building as essential tools in sustainable transition. The study also showed a practical and methodological sustainable transition strategy that enabled on-ground implementations, like retrofitting existing buildings and infrastructure and providing sustainable architectural prototypes, which addressed various associated environmental challenges and significantly reduced emissions, energy, and water consumption, meanwhile achieving profitability and positively having social influences. Although the study focuses on the Egyptian context, it can provide a trajectory to decarbonize the industry toward carbon neutrality. The authors also believe further studies exploring different aspects would be beneficial.
