On a global scale, the Mediterranean basin represents one of the areas in which the effects of climate change manifest themselves most forcefully, making urban environments—seriously vulnerable on both sides of the basin—always more often exposed to extreme events of increasing frequency and intensity. Cities, understood as complex socio-ecological systems, today face a condition of “polycrisis”, a term used by Edgar Morin to express the composite character of contemporary crises—environmental, humanitarian, health, and economic. Urban spaces are exposed to “natural” phenomena mainly related to water and temperature with strongly altered trends, the origin of which is now to be found in the Anthropocene’s action on the planet. By adopting an interdisciplinary and interscalar perspective, the paper aims to identify possible methods and tools for the active and participative engagement of local communities in the Mediterranean basin, adopting strategies of involvement of the inhabitants in the (re)design of urban open spaces by interpreting them as “pools of resilience”—referring to Elinor Ostrom’s concept of natural goods as common goods, defined as “community pools”. The research intersects and puts together the disciplines of Architectural Technology, Design and Urban Design and intends to propose innovative ways of co-constructing the climate resilience of fragile urban areas in a geographical context with a clear common matrix—albeit extremely varied—qin terms of social, religious, and linguistic cultures and therefore spatial, architectural, and constructive cultures. Acting on the “software” component means including in the project vision bottom-up and informal skills derived from traditional knowledge of places and communities to be valorised and integrated into the specialised capabilities. The article presents a critical analysis of a selection of virtuous experiences aimed, on the one hand, at the climate adaptation of public open spaces, and on the other hand, at the social regeneration of abandoned urban spaces. Starting from this analytical framework, the study intends to initiate a multidimensional mapping of project practices that will be implemented as a knowledge repository according to a “phygital” dimension, both physical and digital, leading on the one hand to the implementation of experimental actions to be conducted on the open spaces of the cities identified as pilot cases, and on the other hand to the construction of an open source digital platform that can be continuously expanded by the user community. In both outputs, urban spaces provide spatial support for the sharing of techniques and knowledge and, consistent with the adopted perspective, the project acts as a tool for cultural dissemination and community training targeting the climate and social resilience of Mediterranean cities. The article proposes a research methodology that crosses disciplines and scales of design, allowing the complexity of contemporary challenges to be framed within dynamic cognitive frameworks that weave relationships among communities and urban open spaces understood as material and immaterial landscapes shaped by the technical and traditional knowledge of local communities.
