The medina represents an ancestral urban model that advocates the principles of sustainable development. This ancient city bears witness to the ingenuity of our predecessors in designing resilient and sustainable living spaces. In this publication, we will focus on three case studies of Moroccan medinas: Rabat, Fez, and Marrakech. Through their in-depth analysis, we will understand their close relationship with sustainable development. By highlighting the challenges posed by irresponsible interventions in the preservation of this Moroccan heritage treasure, we will introduce the 2011 Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) as a holistic approach enabling effective conservation of these ancestral vestiges. Its implementation represents a relevant solution to promote sustainable management of medinas and thus contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
