Decarbonization is considered one of the immediate actions to reach climate neutrality (CN) by 2050. Moreover, net zero, low-carbon buildings, and clean and smart mobility can play a key role in achieving Net Zero cities and CN by 2050. Considering the above, the aim of this research is to highlight the importance of Net Zero Energy buildings (NZEBs) that can contribute to reaching the goal of Conference of Parties (COP26) in mitigating 45% of CO2 emissions by 2030 and getting to net zero by 2050, thereby attaining CN. The methodology approach adopted is based on a qualitative approach through the highlighting of the best practices net zero buildings globally and in Egypt. Thus, NZBs and the integration of photovoltaics in the form of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and building-applied photovoltaics (BAPV) are direct pathways to achieve this goal within the building sector and are crucial components in the pursuit of CN by 2050. Demonstrating the Global perspective in creating NZBs and mitigating CC, showcase the effort exerted by all cities aiming to achieve net zero status by 2050 at the latest. Selected global examples of NZBs are analyzed and presented. Ultimately, policies, action plans, and the application of clean energy and integrating photovoltaic (PV) in buildings and cities in Egypt would contribute to global initiatives to mitigate CC and attain COP26 outcomes. Furthermore, achieving net zero carbon and managing the “transition” poses significant challenges for cities and regions. However, coupling these goals with innovative thinking for the future is essential if cities worldwide are to become resilient enough to attain the outcomes of COP26, COP27, and COP28. The study can pave the way toward transforming the building industry and cities to become low-carbon, getting to Zero, and be sustainable.
