Is it possible to establish a virtuous relationship between technological elements for the production of renewable energy, especially wind energy, and the existing landscape? In a context where the wind energy sector faces significant resistance, especially due to environmental and landscape incompatibility, the thesis argues that wind power plants can overcome these obstacles by integrating, not only physically but also culturally, into the contexts they occupy. To achieve this, it is necessary to understand the territory as an evolving system that must transform and engage with new paradigms dictated by the passage of time and contemporary needs. “The territory should not be considered as a given, but the result of different processes” (Corboz, André. The Land as Palimpsest. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1985). It is necessary to emphasize the need to implement an energy transition, considering landscape transformation as an opportunity to initiate processes that generate shared values within communities, redesigning new transformation methods, and rejecting an aprioristic approach that dogmatically denies any form of action. In fact, the proposed thesis challenges the current view of mere mitigation, suggesting design scenarios committed to a sustainable redefinition of the landscape through technological research anchored in the culture of design. As Turri states, humans must be both actors and spectators of territorial transformations to build the landscape until interpreting it as a culturally dynamic element within the environment (Turri, Eugenio. Il Paesaggio come Teatro: Dal Mito alla Realtà. Venice: Marsilio Editori, 1998). The goals of climate neutrality by 2050 and a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions (compared to 1990 levels) by 2030 (European Commission. Fit for 55: Delivering the EU’s 2030 Climate Target on the Way to Climate Neutrality. Brussels: European Commission, 2021) pose a series of complex issues for the European Union, including a significant increase in “clean” energy production from renewable sources and a drastic reduction in dependence on energy imports while simultaneously aiming to promote modern economic growth and the creation of infrastructure in the landscape that can generate identity values. The proposed contribution focuses on critical analysis and innovative solutions in the field of wind design to address these challenges in an integrated manner. Through a literature review, the state of the art of projects aimed at wind energy production will be explored, applied to different intervention scales. In particular, virtuous case studies that go beyond simple mitigation, transforming into agents of change carrying new technological, symbolic, and aesthetic content, will be highlighted. These case studies represent decisive examples of how wind design can contribute not only to sustainable energy production but also to the construction of landscapes that reflect the values of our time. The analysis aims to explore wind design as an integral part of a broader strategy for energy transition. Advanced technological aspects will be considered, differentiating scale, uses, and consumption: domestic, urban, and landscape. The objective is to provide a comprehensive framework for practices and solutions that respond to the construction of new technological landscapes, outlining a proactive approach to territorial design and countering static resistances in favor of an evolutionary process that reflects the dynamic needs of contemporary society to trigger a proper energy transition.
