The human species collectively faces a potential breakdown of the Earth’s ecological capacity. This last chapter suggests that we must change our values, mindset, and thinking to go in a more sustainable direction. The Earth Charter can represent this type of needed alternative way of thinking. It encompasses a spiritual intelligence also embedded in the philosophy of deep ecology. To avoid a development threatening the Earth’s ecological capacity, the state and municipalities must organize themselves differently in coming years. This may involve greater focus on the commons and involving residents more in organizing themselves, sharing common goods, and building good local communities. Future public institutions may perhaps play on this dynamic of trust, which we now see a desire for through demands for a trust reform in Norway.
