This chapter discusses some definitions and concepts that we consider fundamental to the excellent knowledge of metrology. We show some interactions with related areas, such as standardization, conformity evaluation, and quality, and present the metrological structures at the international, regional, and national levels. Definitions and concepts, in the majority of cases, are anchored in the reference document JCM 200:2012 International Vocabulary of Metrology—Basic and general concepts and associated terms (VIM). Several exercises are provided in the chapter to help you set the concepts.
