The Impact of Psychosocial Risks on Burnout: Tracing the Pathways to Professional Exhaustion?

Psychosocial risks associated with work emerge as critical factors affecting both the physical and psychological health of workers, and major probability to develop burnout symptoms. This study aims to enhance the understanding of the main psychosocial risks of the contemporary work environment and analysing their contribution to the occurrence of burnout among 364 professionals across various sectors, from public and private organisations in Portugal. This study was supported by the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT-23) to assess burnout dimensions and Health and Work Survey (INSAT) to assess psychosocial risk factors. Results showed a medium risk of burnout, namely the exhaustion symptom of burnout. Psychosocial risks, specifically employment relations and ethical and value conflicts were the main predictors of burnout symptoms It is important to develop working conditions’ interventions and organizational practices to reduce this occupational health problem that affect a high number of professionals and undermine the public health.
