The methodology known as Design Science Research (DSR) can be broadly defined as a “method that establishes and operationalizes research when the desired goal is an artifact or recommendation” (Dresch, A., Lacerda, D.P., Antunes Jr, J.A.V., Design science research. Springer, 2015, p. 67). This approach is deeply rooted in the ontological and epistemological foundations of “design science” (Dresch, A., Lacerda, D.P., Antunes Jr, J.A.V., Design science research. Springer, 2015) and contributes scientifically to addressing field problems, as exemplified in the preceding chapter. Researchers such as Berglund et al. (Academy of Management Review, 45:825–846, 2020), Dimov (2016) (Toward a Design Science of Entrepreneurship, Models of Start-up Thinking and Action: Theoretical, Empirical and Pedagogical Approaches, Advances in Entrepreneurship, Firm Emergence and Growth, 18). Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Leeds, 2016), Dresch et al. (Design science research. Springer, 2015), and Romme & Reymen (2018) build upon the work of Herbert Simon (1996), particularly his distinction between the natural sciences and the “science of the artificial” or design sciences. Simon’s (1996) delineation separates explanatory science, where the phenomenon under study exists independently of the researcher, and the “science of the artificial” or design sciences. In design science, the researcher deliberately creates an artificial phenomenon or artifact with the explicit intention of solving context-related field problems. Illustrating the relevance of the design approach to educational challenges, McKenney and Reeves (Educational Researcher 41:16, 2012) define educational design research as “a genre of research in which the iterative development of solutions to practical and complex educational problems also provides the context for empirical investigation, yielding theoretical understanding that can inform the work of others” (p. 7). This chapter proposes the design of artifacts, a key concept in DSR, for entrepreneurial education research. It starts by positioning DSR in the context of scientific methods and describes its main characteristics, including the concept of artifacts. We end with a detailed description of the steps performed in DSR, illustrated with an example of research that includes the design of an artifact for entrepreneurial education.
