Epidemiology of Diabetes
摘要
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is considered to be an important public health issue globally in the twenty-first century. The World Health Organization has identified DM as one of top five priority diseases. According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the number of diabetic adults worldwide reached 537 million, showing a remarkable increase of 74 million in comparison to 2019. The future projection doesn’t appear better considering that by 2030 the number of diabetic population will rise up to 643 million. Current lifestyle and ageing population are two important factors contributing to this accelerating increase. Notably, it is estimated that 94% of the increase in the number of people with DM by 2045 will occur in low- and middle-income countries, where population growth is expected to be greater (Magliano and Boyko IDF diabetes atlas. 2021).
