Tobacco kills more than eight million people each year, including 1.3 million non-smokers who are exposed to passive smoking. In 2020, 22.3% of the world’s population used tobacco: 36.7% of men and 7.8% of women ( https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/tobacco ). In addition, on average, people who smoke die 10 years earlier than non-smokers (Doll R et al., BMJ 328:1519, 2004); using the SCORE risk chart, smoking accounts for about 50% of total cardiovascular risk in both genders (Piepoli MF et al., Eur Heart J 37(29):2315–81, 2016) and smoking ranks among main risk factors (RFs) for cardiovascular disease of atherosclerotic origin (ASCVD), the most common arterial disease by its prevalence and incidence. It includes mainly peripheral artery disease (PAD), coronary artery disease, and ischemic strokes.
