The Deficit Libres-Oriental Aquifer (Balsas Region) of Eastern-Central Mexico Under Global Warming: Hydrochemistry, Moisture Recycling and Rock-Water Interaction

This chapter evaluated physico-chemical characteristics as well as stable isotopeIsotope compositions of groundwater in four different seasonsSeason of a year from the deficit Libres-Oriental aquiferAquifer of the Balsas hydrological administrative region at eastern-central Mexico in the context of global warming and its effect on recurrent droughtsDrought. Irrespective of the seasonSeason, the groundwater mostly showed homogeneity with Ca–Mg–HCO3 facies, and comparable values of the stable isotopeIsotope fractions and d-excess. This similarity reflected possible decadal scale mixing of different moistureMoisture sourcesSource and comparable recycling mechanismsMechanisms. Autumn samples with the highest variationsVariation in δ18O (ca. 4.51‰), δ2H (ca. 27.66‰) and d-excess (ca. 8.92‰) suggested additional recycling processes in the wetter months. Even though the ion exchangeExchange between water and aquiferAquifer materials was crucial for the water chemistry, the observation of persistent simple dissolution of carbonates and evaporites (salinity) in all the seasonsSeason is precarious in the frameworkFramework of depleted precipitationPrecipitation and aquiferAquifer overextraction. Thus, the sustainability of groundwater qualityGroundwater quality of this aquiferAquifer should be considered as one of the immediate priorities.
