Given that colloidal particles can transport harmful and helpful chemicals, they can be used to remediate polluted areas. A representative sedimentSediment sample of 25 kg was collected randomly from a refinery site in northwestern Suez Gulf, Egypt and utilized for the experimentsExperiments. In this respect, a laboratory modelModel was designed to inject the synthesizedSynthesized nano-emulsion with 1 kg of sedimentsSediment polluted by HOCs and Pb. One cycle of nano-emulsion flushing (Fc) was applied to the contaminated soilSoil and then rinsed with water six times (Wc). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to analyze the typical nano-emulsion droplet size, while the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) were determined by the soxhlet extractionExtraction process. The total paraffines were determined by gas chromatography (GC) analysis. The results revealed that nearly all nano-emulsion droplets (98.7%) were smaller than 100 nm. The TPHs decreased from 4.54 to 1.86 wt.% after one flushing and sixth water washing run, with TPH removal efficiencyEfficiency (E) equal to 59%. These results indicated that the removal efficiencyEfficiency of Pb was 100%, i.e. the initial concentration of Pb (399.95 mg/kg) became 0.00 mg/kg after one flushing and sixth water washing cycles. The research is potentially meaningful for sediment contamination remediation, thus protecting groundwater from contamination from polluted sediments.
