Sleep and Cardiac Arrhythmias in Shift Workers—Study by Holter

Introduction Shift work is a work regime used by several companies, with positive and negative factors, both for workers and family life's. There are different types of shift schedules, whose form of rotation has different impacts on the sleep–wake cycle and with different repercussions on the quantity and quality of sleep, on social and family life and on the functioning of different human organs and systems, including the heart and vascular. Objectives To assess the circadian rhythm in rotating shift workers, and the probability of sleep apnea and cardiac arrhythmias in these workers. Methods The collection of information took place while the worker performed work duties at night, with Holter monitoring for 4 h and after completing a sociodemographic audition, Epworth sleepiness scale, STOP-BANG questionnaire and short questionnaire about their sleep after the shift. Results The sample consisted of 15 workers on a night shift, aged between 8 and 60 years old, with an average BMI of 25.14, of these, 87% of the individuals had arrhythmias, supraventricular extrasystole (SVE), ventricular extrasystole (SV) or both and 47% of the sample showed a high risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS). Conclusions This study confirmed that shift work causes circadian rhythm disturbances, and with that, the risk of daytime sleepiness as well as the existence of sleep apneas and cardiac arrhythmias in these workers.
