In conversation with his close friend and literary collaborator Yankunytjatjara writer Ali Cobby Eckermann, a well-known and respected poet in her own right, Lionel Fogarty reflects on his prolific literary and political output over 40 years since the publication of his collection Kargun in 1980. The interview represents a significant intervention by celebrating Fogarty’s literary achievements in his own voice, allowing the poet to speak directly to many of the issues raised in the preceding chapters. Eckermann and Fogarty speak on a wide range of topics, including First Nations activism, internationalism, the relationship of oral and written languages, the tensions of official and poetic discourse, Fogarty’s artistic and painting practice, the importance of writing on Country, as well as love, grieving, and grievance.
