The Rise of Spatial AI

Spatial AI is defined here as AI for spatial analysis, AI that is generated/created from spatial data and AI that is embedded in physical and/or digital spatial domains (or any combinations of these). Spatial AI entails Geospatial AI (GeoAI), as well as several forms of spatially-enabled AI. Some characteristic applications of Spatial AI are considered in this chapter, in various fields of science and technology, along with scientometric analyses of the key concepts and numbers of publications that define the context and boundaries of this rapidly developing field of AI. An examination of the conceptual framework of Spatial AI in comparison with GeoAI shows that although GeoAI has emerged as the prevailing type of Spatial AI it is not the only one since other domains of AI also contribute to the development of theory and applications of Spatial AI. Indeed, these domains (spatial robotics, AR, metaverse, medical applications of Spatial AI, applications of evolutionary AI etc.) are spatial but not geographic.
