A Multi-location PCU Calculation for Traffic Analysis

This study aims to investigate and analyze the composition and impact of different vehicle types on traffic flow and congestion levels at a specific intersection. The primary research question addresses how diverse vehicle types contribute to overall traffic load and what insights can be gained for effective traffic management and urban planning. The research utilises traffic volume data collected at the selected intersection during a specified period. PCU (Passenger Car Unit) calculations are employed to assess the relative impact of each vehicle type on traffic flow. Various traffic simulation software tools, including PTV Vissim, etc. are reviewed for their applicability in multi-location traffic analysis. The PCU calculations reveal a diverse mix of vehicle types at the intersection, with passenger cars and trucks contributing significantly to congestion. Buses, despite being fewer in number, have a substantial impact due to their higher PCU values. The total PCU, representing the overall traffic load, is calculated as 160 PCU/min. The study also emphasizes the importance of considering both volume and type of vehicles in traffic management strategies. The findings underscore the significance of understanding traffic composition for effective urban planning and traffic management. The balanced PCU contributions among vehicle types highlight the need for tailored strategies that consider the varying impacts of different vehicles. The study provides valuable insights for infrastructure planning, safety considerations, and environmental impact assessments. Continuous data collection and analysis are identified as crucial for addressing evolving traffic challenges and making informed decisions for the future of urban mobility.
