Hill roads are having very complex alignments. It contains many horizontal curves and vertical curves also. Hence road user’s safety is important in hilly sections. Because of its complexity in alignment accidents happening on the hill roads. To reduce rate of accident to negligible rate, the geometric design parameters of hill roads should be done carefully. Also, analyzing the road safety before designing and after construction of road is necessary. The hill roads have many design parameters. The geometric design of hill roads is varying from the plain and rolling terrain roads. While special standards for designing of hill roads are provided in special Indian Road Congress (IRC SP 48). The traffic road safety is mainly depending on major three factors i.e. vehicle, driver’s behavior and the infrastructure. To improve traffic safety, it is necessary to take into consideration all this factors. But in the hill road sections infrastructure should be in proper manner to assist driver for riding their vehicles. The infrastructure includes road pavement, geometry of road, road markings and sign boards, slope protection structures etc. Geometric design of highway is designing of physical parameters of highway including elements in cross-section road, applicable sight distances, Horizontal & vertical alignments, elements of curves, superelevation, etc. India has surpassed China with 1.4286 Bn population as estimated by The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and increases population progressively which causes increase of traffic volume too. So that, it is important to design and construct the geometric elements of the road in the initial stage itself by considering future traffic growth. In this research paper geometry of the road has been analyzed and modified according to an appropriate geometric standard to enhance road safety.

摘要
