The architecture and administration of India's present metro train systems provide essential lessons for future system planning and funding. The 2017 formulation of the Metro Rail Policy has resulted in the expansion of a variety of rail-based public transportation networks across the country. The Government of India has continued to provide funding support over the last 20 years. There are presently subway, commuter, and train networks in use in India. Probably by the year 2025, metro rail networks in major cities of India will be about 697 km which was recorded as 222 km in three cities in 2011. The authorities have also claimed that an additional 1,032 km metro rail network will service around 27 municipalities. This means that the permitted metro rail projects are expected to cost INR 3 trillion over the next five years. In this study, we attempt to assess the operational and financial efficiency and efficacy of India's present metro train networks. The performance of Indian metro rail systems has been compared to the best practices from across the world. The outcomes can be used to plan out existing and future metro networks in any developing region.
