This essay situates an evaluation and a possible agenda for the emerging discipline of “liturgical theologyLiturgical theology” in the context of pivotal assertions of Sacrosanctum Concilium. In pride of place, we cite the enormously influential work of Cipriano VagagginiVagaggini, Cipriano, OSB as a key voice relating theology and liturgy in the pre-conciliar debates. In addition, his influence is seen in the work of the post-conciliar committees whose members devised the present revised rites. Clearly, that work was carried out by mostly European figures who were largely clerics, and largely clerical. Six decades hence that kind of work on sources, texts and rites needs to be broadened, as that centrally important (ongoing) work was and is required for any revision of the liturgy. In particular the invitation from Sacrosanctum Concilium to engage in inculturationInculturation needs to continue especially in regard to voices of ‘the world church.’ As a discipline ’liturgical theologyLiturgical theology’ needs to be broadened beyond the largely textual methods and studies employed thus far.
