This essay explores the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy via the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRMGIRM). Whereas the former has influenced Protestant traditions in many ways, impact of the latter is less in evidence, in part because of perceived preoccupation with hierarchyHierarchy which Protestant traditions may intend to resist. However, reading the GIRM alongside the insights of AnglicanAnglican Eric MascallMascall, Eric and Lutheran Gordon LathropLathrop, Gordon, the essay suggests ways that hierarchy presents—sometimes unwittingly—in Protestant liturgies. LathropLathrop, Gordon and MascallMascall, Eric’s insights challenge Protestant liturgies to find ways through hierarchical distortions. They might also invite reflection among Catholics that press forward Pope FrancisFrancis’ railing against clericalismClericalism, to expand into a more fulsome critique of hierarchy too. By trying to center attention, as Pope Francis does, on abuse in connection to clericalism, the essay appeals for engagement with public concern that urges the churches to think critically through their ritual pictures and ceremonial scenes.
