Development of a Semi-Automatic Prosthetic Hand Using Visual Perception and EMG

Individuals with amputations are prone to experiencing physical limitations that obstruct their ability to adapt to daily life, often necessitating the use of a prosthesis to replace the missing limb. However, the cost of prosthetics can be high, depending on the technology, materials used, patient needs, and the feasibility of functionality. The present paper explains the development of a 3D prototype prosthetic in low-resource settings integrating image processing techniques and EMG for semi-automatic user control created with the assistance of OneShape software. The hand showed an EMG signal acquisition accuracy of 80% with an object recognition of 45% and a response time of 2 seconds; the hand needs mechanical improvements to enhance grip strength, stability, and response time. This work provides a foundation for further developments in prosthetic technology and offers practical solutions for enhancing education in the field.
