After four years of vigorous national and regional debate, the Victoria University had been successfully inaugurated in 1880. The date marked a significant turning point in the history of English higher education, the establishment of England’s fifth university, behind Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and London, and the first based in the industrial and more densely populated North of the country. The new University was free from the effective constraints posed by the Church of England on some of the older institutions; as new scientific disciplines emerged and demand for higher education increased, from women as well as men and across a widening social base, exciting opportunities were arising.
