Submandibular Sialadenectomy

  • Mahmoud Sakr

摘要

Submandibular gland (SMG) excision is traditionally performed via a trans-cervical approach. Surgical incisions that provide access to head-neck lesions have rapidly evolved from the traditional incisions along natural skin creases to more cosmetically acceptable incisions in the local region or from remote locations that permit comprehensive surgery. These access incisions are often smaller and complemented by endoscopy, robotic instrumentation, and laparoscopic techniques that allow the surgeon to achieve and maintain excellent operative exposure and view. This chapter explores the surgical anatomy and pathology relevant to submandibular sialadenectomy. It also discusses the indications and contraindications of the procedure, as well as patient preparation and the different approaches to the submandibular gland. This chapter also describes in detail the various techniques of SMG excision including the open techniques (external trans-cervical approach—trans-oral approach) and the endoscopic techniques (endoscopic-assisted approach—completely endoscopic approach). Finally, it discusses the potential complications of submandibular sialadenectomy and their management.
