With the increasing ubiquity of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the rapid rise of smart home environments, users are sharing more data than ever before. Though the adoption of smart home devices may bring many convenience benefits to the end user, the cost to personal autonomy should be considered. This paper discusses the means in which smart home user personal autonomy may best be preserved, and presents arguments for who should be ethically responsible for said preservation. Informed consent, user control, and legislation are identified as key factors integral to the preservation of user autonomy. The paper concludes that both the user and vendor are ethically responsible for preserving user autonomy from a consequentialism perspective, and that the government bears this responsibility from a deontology perspective.
