A ship collision is an accident resulting in damage, injury or death to crew members and the environment. Vessel collisions can result from many causes, including navigational errors, mechanical failures, meteorological phenomena, or human negligence. Given the fact that the outcome of a ship collision can be serious depending on the size and speed of the vessel, as well as direct damage, up to and including loss of life, collisions can lead to oil spills, disruption of sea lanes, and subsequent costly litigation, so this topic is a priority. This paper discusses the problem of ship collision and presents a systematic study on the method and strategy to reduce the risk of ship collision. With a research objective, the authors have also proposed an attempt to measure the impact of this problem on the efficiency of international shipping and discussed various strategies used to limit the risk of collisions, with a detailed study of the difficulties and origins of these events. Although this research topic has been extensively studied, the presented review examines and discusses the contribution of various factors and emphasizes their operational importance.
