This chapter presents a systematic scheme for ensuring safe operation of a ship by decomposing safety into four main components: technical, navigational, environmental and technological safety. Each component is considered as practically independent but influenced by similar factors. Three evaluation approaches are proposed: considering safety as the simultaneous fulfillment of all four components, as a weighted average of the components reflecting their relative importance, and as an average with equal weights. Probabilistic analysis shows that the resulting safety probabilities differ depending on which probabilities are assigned to the individual components. The comparative analysis shows that while all approaches are viable, the first approach provides a comprehensive understanding of safety events. Practical implications include the need for balanced risk assessment and safety improvement strategies. Further research is recommended to refine assessment methods and improve safety management practices in the maritime industry.
