Pectobacterium is a major phytopathogen that causes blacklegs and soft rot diseases in many crops, leading to high economic burden on agricultural industries. To date, Pectobacterium is subjected to continual taxonomical classification and delineation of many species and subspecies. In addition, Pectobacterium is continually reported in novel hosts all over the world. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning a lack of viable treatments for controlling this phytopathogen. Hence, in this book chapter, we aim to provide up-to-date knowledge about the genus Pectobacterium, focusing on taxonomic intricacies within this genus, in addition to the insights into its global distribution and modes of transmission. The host interactions, detailing the range of symptoms induced in susceptible plants, were also explored. Additionally, we outline the effective techniques used for isolation and identification of Pectobacterium species, followed by a comprehensive analysis of epidemiological factors influencing disease spread. The economic importance of Pectobacterium-induced diseases is elucidated, underscoring their impact on agricultural productivity. Lastly, this chapter reviews an array of control measures, ranging from traditional to cutting-edge strategies, offering a holistic perspective on managing Pectobacterium-associated challenges in agriculture.
