Phytomonas
摘要
Phytomonas are protozoa that belong to the family Trypanosomatidae. These organisms are phytopathogens that cause disease in various plants. Phytomonas species have a worldwide distribution and are transmitted mainly by insects. The infection occurs in the extracellular and intracellular levels; therefore, wilting might happen to the plants. Morphologically, Phytomonas species can exhibit various morphological forms, with the kinetoplast typically located in the middle of the body, and a flagellate. Additionally, molecular studies of small subunit rRNA and glycosomal GAPDH are helpful in their identification. This organism, in a proper environment, can spread easily as they are transmitted by insects, and consequently cause economic loss. A study in Brazil showed 43% damage to the coconut plantations by Phytomonas. Management strategies for Phytomonas are challenging, due to the small size of the organism, and its vectors. However, a proper chemical method to control the vectors reduced the severity of the disease.
