Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus, two major genera within the Trichodoridae family consist of polyphagous ectoparasitic nematode species with a global distribution. These nematodes cause direct harm by feeding on plant roots and act as vectors for plant viruses, including Tobacco rattle virus, Pea early browning virus, and Pepper ring spot virus. They primarily feed on plant root tips, enhancing the formation of stubby root symptoms, earning them the common name “stubby root nematodes.” Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus are characterized by a curved solid stylet called onchiostyle, which lacks stylet knobs. The life cycle of these nematodes involves eggs, juveniles, and adults, with both amphimictic and parthenogenetic reproduction observed. The various species within Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus pose significant threats to crops, highlighting the need for their accurate identification to enable effective management. Identification relies on a combination of morphological features, morphometric measurements, and DNA-based molecular techniques targeting internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA (rDNA), 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, and D2/D3 expansion region of the 28S rRNA. Managing these nematodes proves challenging due to their wide host range and their ability to migrate deep within the soil. However, various approaches, such as crop rotation with non-host crops, application of nematicides and nematode-suppressive soil amendments, and use of biocontrol agents have been explored to manage these nematodes and minimize their impact on crop production.
