Phytopathogenic bacteria of the Dickeya genus, which were previously classified under the Erwinia genus, cause important diseases worldwide among agricultural and ornamental plants. In recent years, this genus has been revised taxonomically, resulting in the identification of twelve primary species. Despite their global relevance, these bacteria exhibit a wide geographical distribution, with strains isolated from numerous continents. Plants, contaminated water, and possibly some insect vectors are the main sources of their transmission. Dickeya’s wide host range makes it remarkable, as it affects a variety of plants, including food crops as well as ornamentals. Symptoms include soft rot, wilts, necrosis, and others. As Dickeya primarily enters the plant through wounds, rapidly multiplies, and produces enzymes that destroy plant cell walls, it is crucial to understand its pathogenicity. For precise identification and isolation of Dickeya species, specialized media and molecular techniques are required. In terms of epidemiology, environmental conditions, particularly temperature and humidity, play significant roles in disease onset and progression. Dickeya-induced diseases have significant economic implications, since they result in yield losses and reduced quality in several crops that are important economically. Effective control measures are imperative to addressing these challenges. Biological methods rely on beneficial microorganisms antagonistic to Dickeya. Chemical methods rely on careful use of bactericides. Crop rotation and sanitation practices are among the cultural methods. Plant varieties that are resistant or tolerant to Dickeya offer potential avenues for disease management as well.
