Streptomyces is commonly known as a genus of bacteria that is beneficial in many aspects, particularly in soil ecosystems where they act as decomposers, aiding nutrient cycling. Among the 23,000 bioactive secondary metabolites produced by microorganisms, two-thirds are produced by actinobacteria, and Streptomyces spp. accounts for more than 70% of these. Streptomyces bacteria are ubiquitous in soil, conferring a characteristic earthy smell, and they have an important ecological role in the turnover of organic material. Streptomyces are the source of most antibiotics used in veterinary medicine, agriculture, and medicine. Some Streptomyces strains have been implicated as plant pathogens or disease-causing agents. The pathogenicity of Streptomyces may be due to specific genetic traits or environmental conditions that allow it to cause diseases in plants. Streptomyces species can enter plants through wounds or natural openings, such as stomata, and once inside, they can proliferate and cause disease symptoms. Management strategies for Streptomyces-related plant diseases typically involve cultural practices such as crop rotation, sanitation, and the use of disease-resistant cultivars. In some cases, chemical control methods such as the application of fungicides or bactericides may also be employed, although their efficacy can vary depending on the specific pathogen and conditions.
