Spiroplasma

Spiroplasmas are wall-less descendants of Gram-positive helical bacteria in the Mollicutes class. Motile prokaryotes have been recognized as the root cause of several agricultural diseases and are frequently found in close proximity to a wide variety of insects. Three spiroplasma species are known to cause plant diseases: S. kunkelii, S. citri, and S. phoeniceum. Characterization of novel species using phenotypic and genotypic assays is a key component of spiroplasma research. Studying their attachment, invasion into insect tissues, and spreading to neighboring tissues is essential for understanding their pathogenesis in insect hosts and infected plants. Spiroplasma transmission by insects has undergone numerous independent evolutionary changes, particularly in the phloem-dwelling bacteria. Successful in vitro cultivation of S. citri marked an important turning point in the study of spiroplasmas, whose growth is controlled by temperature, pH, and oxygen concentration. To confirm and differentiate between species, methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies are used. The influence of spiroplasmas on agriculture, which results in lower yields and financial losses in crops, including maize, citrus, and horseradish, gives them economic significance. Spiroplasma infections are managed using integrated pest management strategies, including cultural practices, host resistance, chemical treatments, and biological control. Spiroplasmas are used as model organisms in microbiological studies to advance our understanding of genetics, cell biology, and evolutionary processes.
