In India, irrespective of our political views, we all admit that the election process must be fair in all respects. Traditional ballot or Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) based voting system in a large and heterogeneous democracy like India faces lots of man-made hindrances like booth capturing, rigging, tampering with the machines, etc. Procedural problems like fake voting are also there. Along with these, the portability of voters is also becoming a big issue because of their busy life schedules. Voters have to move to different states most often which makes them unavailable for voting. In this article, we review current electronic voting (e-voting) systems, various issues associated with them, prospectives of blockchain-based ideas to improve e-voting, and their challenges in Indian circumstances. We then present the prospect of a secured cloud-based voting system with smart EVM that copes with the challenges.
