The chapter presents the results of a study of the distribution of natural gases and chemical elements in modern bottom sediments of the Gulf of Tonkin. It is based on the analysis of bottom sediment and near-bottom water samples taken by the Russian-Vietnamese expedition in 2013. The resulting patterns of methane distribution, its isotopic characteristics, helium, and hydrogen in the surface sediments and bottom waters of the Gulf of Tonkin indicated that they may migrate from oil sources along permeable zones of deep faults. It was also found that the content of most chemical elements in the surface sediments of this bay is less than or comparable to their content in the upper part of the continental crust. In addition, elevated concentrations of Pb, As, Li, and Ag were found in the sediments.
