Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) are the world’s third-largest food crop, behind rice and wheat. Potato production has grown far faster than other crops due to the peculiarities of creating and gaining better yields of quality output, particularly in emerging countries in tropical and subtropical locations. Potato growers value the crop not just as a food source, but also as a substantial source of revenue. Virus infections significantly reduce global potato production, resulting in a 50% yield reduction. Potato plants may be affected by a variety of viruses. The virus is a small, almost spherical particle that measures 25 nanometres in diameter. PLRV is organically transferred in a circulative, non-propagative manner by Myzus persicae and several other aphid species, which means that after being ingested by a feeding aphid, the virus must circulate through the aphid gut, move into the haemocoel, and then return to the aphid salivary gland before being transmitted into a new plant during the next feed. PLRV symptoms are divided into two categories: primary and secondary symptoms. The initial symptoms are caused by a primary infection, which can be caused by viruses transmitted by aphids during the season. The most visible indicators are coloured or scarlet leaf tips on taller or juvenile leaves that roll and stand upright. The following signs appear in potatoes harvested from damaged tubers. These indications include stunted shoots and the eldest or lower leaves rolling upward. The following appearances, including rubbery consistency and overall leaf roll, as well as stunted growth and net necrosis, were shown to be more severe than the previous markers. A molecular phylogenetic tree analysis was used to determine the evolutionary relationships among all PLRV isolates. Continuous PLRV management will necessitate a combination of approaches for reducing virus transmission by aphids into and within the crop. The generation and maintenance of virus-free seed potato stocks by tissue culture and thermal treatment, as well as the storage and multiplication of sterile material and seed certification programs, have all helped to mitigate the impact of PLRV and other viral infections in potatoes.
