Betel vine being dioecious, is native to East Asian countries, including India, with a chromosomal number (x = 13). Being perennial and a vital cash crop in both national and internal markets, it is widely cultivated by various communities in a modified artificial structure, “Boroj”, which provides support and shades for growth and development. Ten different varietiesVarieties of betel vine are known to be consumed by the ethnic communities of India and are named based on the landraces. In spite of high cultivationCultivation and high medicinal prospects, the betel vine is not much scientifically explored in terms of its geneticGenetic studies and breedingBreeding.
