A culturally responsive pedagogy allows for a fluid understanding of culture and the use of practices that explicitly engages questions of equity and justice (Ladson-Billings, Culturally relevant pedagogy 2.0: a.k.a. the Remix. Harvard Educational Review, 84 (1), 74–84, 2014). A culturally responsive framework integrates relatable aspects of students’ daily lives into the classroom and curriculum. Ladson-Billings (The dreamkeepers: Successful teachers of African American children. Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1994) defines culturally responsiveness as a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using their cultural references to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Using the eight characteristics outlined by Ladson-Billings and the Six Principles for Multicultural Perspectives (Hutton & Sisko, Cultural Responsiveness in Counselling and Psychology. Palgrave, 2021), we provide a roadmap for personal and professional preparation needed to implement a culturally responsive counseling program. As such, school counselors will be able to understand the cultural realities of students and how they apply to academic, career, and personal-social development. School counselors must develop a heightened awareness of the systemic barriers to education students face and challenge policies and initiatives that reinforce systemic barriers.
