Managing Mental and Physical Comorbidities in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
摘要
Consultation-liaison psychiatry (CLP) is an extremely important area of psychiatry and mental health, especially as practiced in general hospital and primary care settings. Among its aims, CLP advances the understanding of the interplay between biological, psychological, behavioral, and social factors in health and disease and influences the implementation of hospital and healthcare policies and practices according to a biopsychosocial, person-centered, and recovery-oriented approach. Several disorders, such as depression, anxiety, delirium, stress-related symptoms, and maladaptive psychosocial reactions to the disease, are part of the clinical aims of CLP. The knowledge of screening for distress and assessment tools (e.g., suicide risk assessment) is important in medical practice to identify complex medical cases, as well as a proper use of psychotropic drugs. By performing a function of liaison (such as relating to both the patient and the family, as well as the medical health care team), CLP also promotes the creation of a common language for providing education and training to healthcare teams (i.e., physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals).
