The genus Corynespora is one of the important fungal genera of the Order Pleosporales. There are more than 100 Corynespora species associated with almost 700 plant species (as endophytes, saprophytes, or pathogens). Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) C.T. Wei is the most important member of this genus and is known for its destructive necrotrophic lifestyle, inciting diseases in more than 500 plant species. The pathogen causes target leaf spot and leaf fall diseases. Damage of target leaf spots in tomato and cucumber can reach up to 70% in yield loss. This chapter discusses the biology, epidemiology, and pathogenicity of Corynespora species, with emphasis on C. cassiicola, the most economically important member of this genus. We then discuss the detection and identification techniques that have been utilized for C. cassiicola. Finally, we outline and discuss various control measures and management strategies for the management of diseases caused by Corynespora species.
