Powdery mildew is caused by nearly 20 fungal genera including Sphaerotheca sp., which belong to the phylum Ascomycetes. The fungus is an obligate, biotrophic parasite that produces chalky white specs on the leaves that enlarge and coalesce and become grey-colored as the disease advances; it ultimately covers the whole leaf surface and can also infect other parts of the plant, such as stems, petioles, fruits, and occasionally on flowers, in a wide range of hosts such as grapes, peas, green gram, black gram, and roses. The mycelium is an ectoparasitic organism that display hyaline and septate. It features upright, short septate conidiophores that bear conidia at their terminal ends. These conidia are oblong, one-celled, minutely verrucose, and contain large fat globules. Upon germination on leaves, the fungus develops haustoria, specialized structures that facilitates nutrient uptake from the host. The fungus exhibits heightened activity during cool, humid, and cloudy weather in both spring and fall, particularly when days are warm and nights remain cool. The pathogen spreads through conidia via air currents. Various chemical fungicide (Hexaconazole, Bavistin, Propiconazole, Wettable Sulfur), as well as bio-control agents (Ampelomyce squisqualis, Trichoderma sp. etc), shows effective control of the fungus. However, advanced studies need to be conducted to include advanced methods of detection and biotechnological approach for detection, diagnosis and management of Sphaerotheca.
