Magnaporthe

The filamentous fungus Magnaporthe has been associated with blast and root rot in numerous cereals and grasses in the Poaceae family. This pathogen has been reported in temperate and tropical regions of the world, which lends it a worldwide distribution. Its significance is more pronounced as it is associated with the devastating blast diseases of wheat and rice. In addition to wheat and rice, Magnaporthe is also associated with diseases of finger millet, pearl millet, maize, oats, and grasses. Although the disease affects the host foliage, its impact is more profound when the panicle is infected, leading to shrivelled grains or no grain formation. Magnaporthe spreads primarily by airborne conidia, whereas it overwinters on crop debris, soil, and seeds. Considering the importance of the pathogen, integrated management strategies have been employed for effective management. Suitable cultural practices, biological agents, chemicals, and resistant varieties are used in combination for the sustainable management of the pathogen. However, further studies need to be conducted to include advanced methods of detection and biotechnological approaches for the management of Magnaporthe.
